Born in Mississippi in 1862, Ida B. Wells was a journalist and activist who spent much of her life tirelessly investigating and documenting the thousands of lynchings taking place at that time in the United States. In 1909, Wells co-founded what would become the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and in June of that year, at the association’s first conference, she gave a speech about “this awful slaughter.”
